We covered a great deal, from my arrest by the police at my braiding salon in 1997 for not having a "permission slip" from the Texas Cosmetology Board, and a thorough discussion of Black Hair in America. My tribute to one of the most humble people I have ever met. She is a living legend in the natural hair industry.

It is with great satisfaction that I am premiering this short "sizzle" film, sharing an event that was traumatic in my life, changing me forever. I am an Ancestral hair braider, and braiding has always been my first love. I had been following my bliss, braiding, for some 20 years when this event occurred in 1997 that would set me on on a legal battle with the State of Texas that lasted another 20 years! 20 years of my life then was in limbo, as I never knew the outcome or when my world would come tumbling down upon me and my five children. With the help of my Ancestors I persevered, ultimately winning a my suit in Federal court that caused the cosmetology law to be changed in 2015. This WIN not only freed me, but freed ALL braiders and natural hair practitioners from fear of cops knocking down their doors and arresting them as I had been. They were and now are free to be entrepreneurs doing what our Ancestors have done for millennia! African Ancestry recently reached out and invited me to take one of their DNA tests, where they use the world's largest database of African DNA lineages to help determine your country and ethnic group of origin. I wanted to share the process of submitting the test before sending it off and getting your results.

I took the Matriclan test, which pulls from your Mother's DNA line to determine your origins. I'll have my results in about 8 weeks, so I'll report back when they come in.

Lisa Swyer lived her entire life as a white woman until a DNA test shattered her sense of identity. In her early 40s, the kit revealed that she had African roots, which ultimately led to her mother to privately admitting that she had an affair with a Black man. Lisa joins our episode titled “My Family Secret” to talk about how her life has changed since discovering the truth.
